BREAKING NEWS: Waldrep Wrap Weight Loss Surgery

The Waldrep WRAP is an economically friendly option for patients struggling with obesity.

In an economy that has everyone figuratively “tightening their belts,” it is sadly ironic that the increasing number of overweight people who would love nothing more than to literally tighten their belts continue to suffer. Trapped in a seemingly no-win situation, they can either opt to live with expanding waistlines and the myriad serious medical complications associated with obesity or financially extend themselves with expensive procedures they can ill afford — that is, until now.

Two highly respected professionals in the community, Donald Waldrep, M.D., FACS, FASMBS, and certified professional coach and advocate Lisa Janks Waldrep, J.D., CPC, are recognized leaders in the field of bariatric surgery (see www.TheWaldreps.com). Their revolutionary programs, combining advanced minimally invasive procedures with an innovative, “whole-person” approach to wellness and empowerment, have set them apart (see www.RxForRenewal. com). Now, this same sensitivity to their patients’ needs has led to the development of several unique alternatives to higher-priced surgeries.

“In the light of the strain of the economy and the fact that so many people are precluded from accessing necessary bariatric surgery to literally save their lives, Dr. Waldrep has come up with an intermediate surgery called the ‘Waldrep WRAP,’” Lisa explains, adding that WRAP stands for weight reduction assistance procedure. “Dr. Waldrep also worked very hard to be one of the few doctors who has independent and government reviews, allowing him to place gastric bands in patients with obesity that is ‘too low’ to qualify under traditional guidelines [see www.Band3035.com]. He also offers traditional gastric banding, gastric bypass and the newer gastric sleeve surgery to give the community additional weight loss options.”

The Waldrep WRAP is priced in the $5,000 to $6,000 range, compared to $15,000 or higher for other minimally invasive procedures in this area. Despite global economic pressures, multiple financing options are available. The doctor’s special banding price for both low- and higher-weight banding is $14,101. These surgical rates compare favorably to other surgeries that can run as much as $17,000 to $30,000 inclusively. Both the Waldrep WRAP and Dr. Waldrep’s low-weight banding study includes a variety of lifestyle elements designed to profoundly impact the patient’s approach to food from a body, mind and spirit perspective. Furthermore, these patients do not have to meet the traditional criteria of being 100 or more pounds overweight, thereby allowing them to address their weight gain in a more proactive way.

Dr. Waldrep, considered to be among the forerunners in the new era of metabolic and bariatric surgery, was appointed to the inaugural Bariatric Surgery Review Committee of the Surgical Review Corporation, which served to establish national Center of Excellence criteria for bariatric surgery programs. Always passionate about his work, he expresses his excitement about these newer procedures.

“This reminds me of 10 or 12 years ago when we were working on the models for bariatric surgery,” says Dr. Waldrep. “It’s exciting to be able to offer people something new and the chance to be among the first to look at how well overweight patients may do in a very safe and accessible way.”
Just as innovative and exciting are Lisa’s programs, designed to complement and promote success of the medical procedures.

“I’m creating a package that addresses the emotional needs of our patients,” she explains. “This program, combined with Dr. Waldrep’s surgeries, empowers patients to create lifestyle balance and a lifetime of vibrant health. Weight loss is a personal, multifactorial process that stems from an understanding of one’s own unique emotional and physical history.”

While for many patients, the initial attraction to the Waldrep WRAP and Dr. Waldrep’s low-weight banding might in fact be the affordability, the reality is that, when compared to other bariatric surgeries, they have the potential of being dramatically safer.

Utilizing advanced, state-of-the-art minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, the Waldrep WRAP simply in-folds the stomach, so it reduces the amount the stomach can hold. This is done without cutting, dividing, discarding or rearranging the intestines. There are no plastic or rubber devices left behind that need adjustment, repair, replacement or removal. The stomach remains intact and, if needed, the stomach and intestines can still be examined.

“Scarring is minimal with these new procedures,” Dr. Waldrep points out. “Because the incisions are closed beneath the skin with very fine, disappearing suture, they typically heal almost invisibly within weeks. Another benefit to these procedures is the fact that patients can leave the surgery center on the same day and resume normal activity as comfort allows.”

Both Dr. Waldrep and Lisa emphasize that surgery is never intended as the “only tool in the toolbox,” but rather, they promote healthy, long-term weight management. This innovative empowerment philosophy provides motivational, inspirational and personal wellness techniques that help ensure their patients’ success.

To this end, their unique CURE Program is also available as part of the Waldrep WRAP package. The CURE Program includes a variety of lifestyle improvement programs and products to aid the patient in this journey.

Speaking with this inspiring couple, it takes only moments to recognize their sincere dedication and real passion for their patients and their work. Holding fast to their conviction that the patient’s full participation is integral to success, they have strived to make weight loss options as affordable as possible during these trying times.

“There’s no one perfect surgery,” says Dr. Waldrep, “but for that matter, there’s no one perfect treatment of any kind. It’s a question of what is best for the individual and how they are able to access it, understand it and work with it. Our goal is to offer viable options so that those who desire and need help will be able to get it. Even if you do have the ‘perfect’ procedure, if it’s not affordable and accessible, how is it going to help people?”

“We’re the idealists; we’re the crazy couple that think we can change the world,” Lisa adds with a smile. “We choose to give people options, and we’re very motivated to make that happen.”
In their ongoing efforts to make these options available to as many people as possible, they offer two locations, one in northern California and one in southern California. Both clinics are staf fed with highly trained, skilled and caring professionals.

I was a patient of Dr. Waldreps in 2002, I had the Roux n-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery and he saved my life.  I lost a total of 155 lbs and I'm healthy, thanks to Dr. Donald Waldrep.  Read my story. He is my hero.
